The Benefits of Using AFM® NG in Swimming Pool Filters

When it comes to keeping pool water clean and healthy, the choice of filter media makes a big difference. Traditionally, most pool filters use standard silica sand. While effective to a degree, sand has several limitations – it can allow fine particles and bacteria to pass through, and over time it clumps together, reducing filtration efficiency.

AFM

AFM® NG (Activated Filter Media Next Generation) is an advanced alternative that offers significant benefits over standard sand:

  1. Superior Filtration – AFM® NG filters down to 1 micron, compared to around 20–30 microns with sand. This means clearer, sparkling water with fewer fine particles and less turbidity.

  2. Bacteria Resistance – The surface of AFM® NG is chemically activated to prevent biofilm from forming. Unlike sand, which can harbor bacteria and pathogens, AFM® NG maintains a more hygienic filter bed.

  3. Chemical Savings – Because AFM® NG captures more contaminants, less chlorine or other disinfectants are needed to maintain safe water. This leads to lower operating costs and a healthier swimming environment.

  4. Longer Lifespan – While sand typically needs replacement every 3–5 years, AFM® NG can last for the life of the filter under proper conditions, reducing maintenance and waste.

  5. Eco-Friendly Performance – With better backwashing efficiency, AFM® NG requires less water to clean, making it more sustainable and cost-effective over time.

Replacing filter sand with AFM® NG can improve water quality, reduce chemical use, cut maintenance costs, and extend the life of your filtration system. For crystal-clear, healthier pool water, AFM® NG is a clear upgrade.

When AFM is used together with ozone, chemical-free UV-C, or our combination of UV-C and copper ioniser, chlorine use is minimal.
